Buying Guide: Key Purchase Considerations
- Pool size and pump compatibility: Choose a system that matches your pool’s gallons and your pump’s horsepower. Larger pools benefit from 50 sq. ft cartridge systems and pumps in the 1/3–1 HP range.
- Filtration efficiency: Look for high-density, pleated cartridges with low micron ratings to capture fine debris and maintain clear water. A 50-micron core and dense pleats typically offer strong performance.
- Maintenance interval: Cartridge replacements every 2 weeks are common for residential above-ground pools. Some systems support easier cleaning or longer filter cycles; consider your maintenance tolerance.
- Durability and materials: Thermoplastic housings, corrosion-proof polymers, and reinforced cores help prevent leaks and extend service life in outdoor environments.
- Ease of installation and compatibility: If you already own an Intex, Bestway, or Doheny setup, select Type A or C compatible cartridges to minimize changes and downtime.
- Energy efficiency: Some models emphasize energy savings by enabling longer intervals between cleanings or optimizing filtration flow, reducing pump run time.
- Cost per use: Consider the cartridge price and how often you’ll replace them. Reusable or washable options may lower long-term costs, but ensure cleaning won’t compromise filtration.
In summary, the right cartridge filter depends on your pool size, pump configuration, and maintenance preferences. The Intex, Doheny’s, VEVOR, Rx Clear, and Bestway options cover a broad range of typical above-ground setups, offering reliable filtration and straightforward upkeep without requiring specialized tools.
